Overview: 21 Days Badarikedar Chardham Yatra

  • Uttarakhand, which is also known as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, attracts numerous devotees throughout the year as it houses several temples. Among the various religious circuits that devotees visit in Uttarakhand, the Char Dham Yatra is one of the most significant. This pilgrimage tour covers four holy sites, namely Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, which are situated at high altitudes in the Himalayas. 'Char' means four, and 'dham' denotes religious destinations in Hindi.

The high-altitude shrines remain closed for about six months every year, starting from October or November and reopening in summer (April or May). It is customary to undertake the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction, starting from Yamunotri and proceeding towards Gangotri, Kedarnath, and finally, Badrinath. The pilgrimage can be completed by road or air (helicopter services are available), and some devotees opt for the Do Dham Yatra, which covers only Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Yamunotri temple is located in Uttarkashi district, in a narrow gorge near the source of River Yamuna, the second-most sacred river in India after River Ganga. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Gangotri, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is situated in the Uttarkashi district, while Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located in the Rudraprayag district. Badrinath, which houses the sacred Badrinarayan Temple, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Undertaking the Char Dham Yatra is considered both divine and challenging but brings spiritual satisfaction to the devotees.
